Holliston Lions Club Recognizes Outstanding Volunteers

The Holliston Lions Heart of a Lion award was established 3 years ago by then President Mark Ahronian to recognize members of the community who are outstanding humanitarians. Persons who live, work, or focus their humanitarian efforts in Holliston and who show an interest in the health and well-being of other members of their community are eligible for this award.

Nominations are made by members of the Holliston Lions Club and the recipients are selected by the Heart of a Lion committee. The recipients are rewarded with a Certificate of Appreciation, a donation from the Holliston Lions Club in their honor to the charity of their choice, and their names engraved on a plaque just inside Town Hall.

Our first award went to Steve Bradford

Steve was recognized for all his efforts related to veteran’s affairs including his involvement with the American Legion, local Veteran’s Day luncheon, and the Memorial Day parade. Steve was also instrumental in working with Select Board to have Holliston designated as a Purple Heart Town.

Steve is also being recognized for his contributions to the Holliston Pantry Shelf. He is a past president and still sits on the board of directors. He works a regular shift at the Pantry and when the Pantry is closed he spends many hours stocking the shelves.

Debbie Kerrigan, Chairperson of the Hear of a Lion Committee for 2024 – 2025 stated “It is with great honor that I present this Heart of a Lion award to Steve Bradford. A donation of $250 will be made to the Holliston Pantry Shelf in his name.”

Lion Debbie then indicated the second award this evening was to recognize two people who were nominated as a team: Robert Weidknecht and Herb Brockert.

For over 25 years these two men envisioned the Holliston Rail Trail and worked to develop the beautiful trail we now love. They have lead others, applied for and received grants and directed the construction of the 6.7 mile trail. This trail is a highlight of our town and is used by thousands of walkers and bikers annually. Due to the foresight and persistence of these two men, what was once a vision is now a reality.

It was with great honor that we presented the second Heart of a Lion Award to Herb Brockert and Robert Weidknecht.

Herb and Robert have also chosen the Holliston Pantry shelf as their preferred charity and a donation of $250 will be made in their names.

Left to Right: Robert Weidknecht, State Rep (and Lion) James Arena-Derosa, Lion Debbie Kerrigan, Herb Brockert, and Steve Bradford

It is worthy of noting that Herb Brockert’s father was a Holliston Lion for more than three decades.

Congratulations to these worthy recipients.
