Holliston’s Miller Elementary School Earns the Distinction of Label FrancEducation For Excellence in French Bilingual Education

On Wednesday June 5th, Miller Elementary School welcomed the Consul General of France, Mustafa Soykurt, and other honored guests to celebrate the schools long standing French Immersion program. The distinction of Label FrancEducation was earned after an extensive evaluation process, and now joins its sister school in the district, Placentino Elementary. Holliston’s elementary schools are just two of only 66 schools across the United States who have been deemed to provide extremely high quality French bilingual education, joining 62 other countries.

Part of the benefits of earning the Label FrancEducation are access to grants, online cultural resources, and visits by French speaking experts in a variety of fields. The morning of June 5th began with a hands-on presentation by Eric Monnin, French Olympic Athlete, professor and sociologist, teaching the French Immersion students about the French Olympics. The students were able to see videos of him recently carrying the Olympic torch, learn about Olympic history and ask questions – all in French.

Following the workshops, Holliston Superintendent, Dr. Susan Kustka, the French Consul General, Mustafa Soykurt, and Miller Principal, David Keim, participated in presenting Holliston’s beloved French Immersion teacher, Claire Picard, the Label FrancEducation plaque on the eve of her retirement.

“It was a great day for French Immersion in Holliston! Having Madame Picard receive this distinguished award on behalf of the amazing French Immersion teachers, while being lauded by so many distinguished guests is the best way to end this year!” said Ida Pappas, Curriculum Coordinator of Holliston Public Schools.
