R&R Landscaping had but two employees in 2002–owner Bobby Read and his son Jim. Jimmy Read told the Holliston Reporter that when his dad unexpectedly passed away, Jim didn’t quite know what to do—go to college or continue in his dad’s business. With the help of John Cyzeski, Jim was able to keep the business going. (July 28th update) That small father/son business has grown over nearly two decades and now employs fifteen workers including Read.
Read reminisced about the early times, “We were working out of Mary Callahan’s old garage (a neighbor) and, to be honest, the business was struggling.” During the ensuing years, Read made do with storage space in his backyard, John Gagnon’s lot on Exchange Street, and more recently, the old Valpey/Fisher site on Highland Street.
“I’ve always wanted a site in town, something I could be proud of and show what we’ve [the company] accomplished over the years,” said Read. His new building site is on Washington Street, directly across from the Weston Pond Soccer Field and on the corner of Hopping Brook Road in the Braggville section of town.
“The new site was affordable,” said Read. Many sites in town were too big for his endeavor. In between calls from employees, and calls to the engineering firm and building inspector, Read wished to thank Titan Contractors and Mark Dellicker for helping him get the project under way.
Hoping to put rumors to rest that the site would become a drive-thru coffee shop or hamburger joint, Read explained that his new 5000-square-foot building will include five drive-thru bays, an office, bathrooms, showers, (not his idea but state law) and a parking lot for employees’ cars. While Read had hoped for the building to be complete in time for fall clean-ups, he said he’ll be happy if his new headquarters is complete by Christmas.
Read and his wife, the former Lyra Sawzin of School Street, live locally in Mudville.
The Holliston Reporter wishes R&R best of luck in its new location.
