How to Support Local Businesses in the New Year

The start of a new year often brings a sense of hope and a desire to make positive changes, including setting resolutions. For many, this might mean letting go of harmful habits like alcohol, nicotine, or opioids. While making a resolution is a powerful first step, achieving it can be challenging—especially overcoming addiction. Remember, you don’t have to do it alone. Support from friends, family, and your community is key, and resources are always available at HDAAC.org.

In this spirit of community and connection, we spoke with two incredible local business owners—Erin Defoyd of The Bird and Bear Collective and John Paltrineri of Fiske’s General Store. Both play vital roles in fostering community and connection in Holliston.

This interview was conducted by Grace Burgett, HDAAC’s intern and a 2023 graduate of Holliston High School.

Grace: Tell us about yourself and your business.

Erin: I’m Erin Defoyd, founder of The Bird and Bear Collective. It’s more than a brand—it’s a mission-driven space, both physical and online, designed to foster connection, creativity, and inclusion. The name “Bird and Bear” reflects how we’re all unique yet connected by shared cycles of nesting, resting, exploring, and soaring. Located downtown, we host workshops, events, and gatherings that bring the community together. It’s a space for imagination, bravery, and belonging. Our goal is to be one of the brightest lights in the community, supporting wellness, creativity, and connection.

John: Fiske’s General Store has been a cornerstone of the community since 1863. In 1973, I joined my father, Louie, after he purchased the store, and together we’ve worked to shape Fiske’s into the family-oriented shop it is today. Our slogan, “most everything,” perfectly captures the wide variety of items we offer for all ages—from newborns to adults—making us truly unique.

Grace: How can the people of Holliston best support you and your business this year?

Erin: The best way to support The Bird and Bear is to be part of it. Follow us (see our social media below), visit, and engage—whether by shopping, attending events, or just walking through our doors. Shopping with us supports local businesses, the heartbeats of communities like Holliston. We also welcome your ideas, membership, or even hosting something in our space. Don’t overthink it—just come by and be curious.

John: My family is deeply grateful for the support of Holliston and surrounding communities over the past 50+ years. Over 20 years ago, we launched the “Friends of Fiske’s” discount club during tough times, and more than 5,500 families have joined. This program offers 20–30% off “most everything” for a year and has been a cornerstone of our success. Supporting us by becoming a member or shopping local keeps us going strong.

Grace: Are there specific products or services you offer that enhance physical or mental health?

Erin: Belonging is at the heart of everything we do. Our workshops, events, and space are designed to help people feel seen, connected, and empowered. Membership isn’t required—it’s just one way to engage. Check out our calendar for opportunities to intersect with creativity, wellness, and community.

John: Fiske’s offers a variety of products that promote physical activity, mental relaxation, and overall well-being. For outdoor fun and physical health, we provide Frisbees, footballs, Wiffle bats, Slip ‘n Slides, water blasters, sleds, and snow tubes. To encourage indoor relaxation and mental stimulation, we feature puzzles, board games, craft kits, art supplies, kids’ books, and Magnatiles. We also carry popular stress-relieving toys, including fidget toys, alongside nostalgic favorites like Beanie Babies. For a touch of indulgence, our Harbor Sweets Chocolates, McCrea’s Caramels, and classic “penny” candy offer a delightful way to treat yourself.

Grace: Do you have words of encouragement for people struggling with substances or mental health?

Erin: Our mantra says it all: Be brave. Stay wild. Dream big. See good. Love better. Braving life’s challenges—whether motherhood, creativity, or addiction—can feel daunting, but you’re not alone. The Bird and Bear is a place to feel supported and connected, like a metaphorical campfire to rest and refuel for what’s next.

John: At Fiske’s, we offer a welcoming space to escape the hustle and chaos of everyday life. Whether you’re looking to have fun, find something meaningful, or simply need someone to talk to, our doors are always open. If you’re struggling, remember that you’re not alone – I’m here to listen and support you.
