Police Log January 5, 1951

January 5, 1951 – Two breaks are now under investigation by Holliston police.  This morning the proprietors of Jacques’ Hardware store on Winthrop street and the Fair Grain Co. on Railroad street reported to Police Chief Louis T. Holbrook that entry had been gained and money and articles taken from their stores.

The thief or thieves jimmied their way into the grain company premises, knocked the combination off the safe, and attempted to pry the door off, without success.  There was not a large amount of money in the safe.  Chief Holbrook said it was likely the thieves used a crowbar in the store, but that they probably had a punch of their own.

Failing in the robbery of the safe the thieves took $3 from a jar, but left some change untouched.

At the hardware store they took a Colt Match Target 22 calibre pistol with a 6-inch barrel, a 12 gauge Winchester pump gun, and are believed to have stolen at least one other shotgun.  It was impossible to determine the amount of ammunition taken, if any.

Chief Holbrook, who has been recuperating after receiving severe injuries when struck several times by a ram early last month, personally conducted the investigation this morning.  Technical assistance from Boston was obtained.

There is no evidence of a break at the hardware store.  Entry might have been gained through some windows above a shed in the rear of the building.  A door at the side which was found ajar this morning may have been used by the thieves as they left the store.
