Seeking Writers & Submissions

The Holliston Reporter is starting to gain even more readers than we had a year ago. A year ago, we were averaging about 300 readers per day. Today we’re averaging about 500. The breakdown we see shows that approximately 80 percent of our readers are based in Holliston. Other traffic appears to be from readers who have since moved from the area but are still interested in what we have to say.

As with so many other activities in Holliston, the Reporter depends on volunteers. The Reporter is being managed by a single volunteer at this point, specifically me. I do not drive because I am legally blind (you don ‘t want me on the roads!!) . I depend on the regular submissions of those around town who have been generous with their time and submissions. Unfortunately, there is a call for more coverage of specific types including:

  • Community Events – we publish all community events to the community calendar (see this link). It’s great to get information on events after the fact but having them early enough for people to take part in them would be fantastic. If you are part of an organization or group that has regular events, please consider submitting them.
  • Town Meetings – currently I am covering the Select Board meetings (and I would prefer to get them done sooner than I do but I have other obligations as well). It would be fantastic if some of you who attend other meetings (School Committee, Finance Committee, etc.) would provide recaps. They don’t have to be perfect, but a recap would be more than welcome (by me and by fellow residents).
  • Youth Sports – thanks to Scott McAdams, we have been publishing basketball recaps (see this link) and Ken Sawyers has begun providing us information on softball (see this link). We would LOVE to see more information about other sports in town (though we have writers submitting these). If you have a student who is active in sports around town, please consider submitting game recaps!
  • Opinion Pieces – there have been several calls for more opinion pieces. I’m happy to publish these but I can’t publish something I do not have! Feel free to submit your opinions about anything and as long as you are not disparaging a group or individual, we’ll be happy to publish it! You can find submission information by following this link.
  • Student Submissions – if you are a student in the Holliston Schools, we’d welcome your submissions also. Feel free to share what you think is going well (or poorly) at your school and we’d be more tahn happy to include it.

Another item worthy of note: if you submit a piece and do not wish to have your name associated with it, we’re happy to publish it anonymously. Don’t be shy! Have your say without fear of blowback.

Some of our regular features have moved around a bit, for example you will find obituaries, school lunch menus, and Holliston Library Events. You can find these above the scrolling banner here:

I am looking forward to beginning my second year of being at the helm of the Holliston Reporter and hoping we can continue to bring you more information than ever before. With your help, we can continue to offer a local source of information.

A final word about comments on the website: I would like to reiterate that I reserve the right to delete comments which are disparaging or hateful. There is no need to target individuals or groups of individuals just because you have a disagreement with their choices. If you have any complaints about comments which are deleted, feel free to reach out to me.
