Virtual Science Fair Seeking Contributors

Holliston’s first-ever Virtual Science Fair opened on May 18th, 2020, and it is a productive way to keep the students of Holliston engaged and entertained during their quarantines.

Namitha Alluri, a junior at Holliston High School, created the fair to give any and all students of all ages an opportunity to enrich themselves in a productive project, instead of spending all of their time glued to their devices. With the fair, she encourages students to cultivate an interest in the sciences in a fun project that can strengthen their curiosity, passion, problem-solving, and research skills.

Hosted on a website and YouTube channel, the fair brings the community together in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic: it allows people to see videos of the students in their communities creating projects they are passionate about and even inspire other students to do the same.

The fair encourages students to “brainstorm, research, present, and submit” on its website.  Any interested student is encouraged to make a science project based on a scientific question.

First, they are to brainstorm a question they’ve always had about the world. Then, using books or the internet, they are to research their question to find the answer. Finally, using materials they can find inside their homes, students are encouraged to post a video of their demonstration to the website that hosts videos from all participants. This demonstration can consist of an experiment, a poster presentation, a song, or any other creative presentation method.

To encourage all students to submit a project, the fair does not have a set end date, but students who are interested in participating are encouraged to submit their projects before June 18, 2020, to guarantee their videos will be presented to the community.

Overall, the Virtual Science Fair is highly beneficial to Holliston students as well as all community residents. Viewers can see students’ projects on the website, and students can share their interest in science with their friends and family.  Contributors can find a cure to their boredom or find a new passion during this time–without having to leave their homes–all while bringing the community together with interesting projects from Holliston students.

More details, including the Google forms students should fill out and the email they should contact for submissions, are all on the Science fair website.

  1. I’m going to check the site out. There should be a link in the release:)

    1. There is a link at the very end of the article, but difficult to see. It’d be nice if links on this site were blue or underlined or something that makes them stand out more.
