6th Grade Boys (Red)  Coach: Sgarano

The Holliston 6th Grade Boys Team (red) won their first game of the season on Sunday against Wayland, 35-27. In the 4th quarter, Joe Sgarano hit a 3 pointer, Donovan Vail hit two jumpers, and Owen Jacquet added a basket to help Holliston break away and seal the victory.

The win was a team effort, with every player contributing. Nine players scored and everyone played tough defense, in what was a very physical game. The team kept their composure and sealed the win.

7th Grade Boys (Red)  Coach: Magoon

Holliston’s 7th grade boys (red) lost a tough game to Westboro by a score of 46-42.  Holliston was again shorthanded and, after building what seemed like a comfortable lead  after three periods, they began to run out of gas.  Westboro’s team hit three 3 pointers in the fourth to come roaring back for the win.  Holliston’s scoring attack was lead by Gavin Bausch, who ended with 14 points, including two high pressure free throws.  Ryan Magoon (8 points) and Joseph Lawendi (4 points) provided ferocious defense throughout the game.  Nick Gorham had his best game of the season chipping in 8 points.  The scoring was rounded out with Nathan Eppinger scoring 2 points, Jon Gebski scoring 2 points, and Brody Stanley scoring 4 points.  Despite the outcome, everyone on the team played exceptionally well, keeping their cool in a highly charged atmosphere.  After the loss, the boys stand at 2-1 heading into a post-holiday match up with Parkway.

8th Grade Boys (Red) Coach: Furey

The Holliston 8th grade boys (red) team traveled to Medfield this week. In another short-handed game, the boys had a nice balanced attack and played well as a team to take Medfield down, 46-22. All 8 of the dressed players contributed offensively. Orson Daniels led the way with 12 points, followed by Chris Baker (8), Quinn McErlean (8), Tristan Snyder (8), Eli Boggess (4), Andrew Ferguson (2), Achyut Pingali (2) and William Hayes (2). Tristan Snyder had 6 monster blocks in the paint. Quinn McErlean led the way with 4 assists and Orson Daniels led with 8 rebounds. Their stifling defense kept their opponent to only 6 points in the entire 2nd half. It was an incredible effort all around. The boys will travel next to Connecticut to take part in the Vertical Hoops Winter Championships at Mohegan Sun!

GIRLS:

5th Grade Girls (Red)  Coach: King

The 5th grade girls (red) had a great game against Hopkinton, earning a 23-15 victory heading into the holiday break. With limited subs due to injury and travel, the girls worked very hard and played lots of minutes. From the point guard position, Lennon King had a solid game with 14 points and 3 assists while Richa Yedugani contributed both offensively and defensively for Holliston sharing point guard responsibilities. Nora Corcoran, Maggie Mulik, and Bella DiPippo all shared a big defensive responsibility down low. While they were overmatched in size, they did not show it! They played tough nosed defense, grabbed rebounds, and made steals in a fast paced game.  They were each also asked to play 4 out of the 5 positions during the game, demonstrating versatility and willingness to do what was best for the team!  Izzy Bartels was also a force on both ends of the court notching points, assists, steals and rebounds! She got it done in every area of the game! Signe Strand fought through sickness to be present for the game so that she could contribute to the team’s victory!  While there is still lots of work to be done, the girls continue to work hard, make in game adjustments, and dig deep during crucial moments of the game.

5th Grade Girls (Black)  Coach: Wing

The Holliston 5th grade girls (black) traveled to Hopkinton to play against the Hopkinton Hillers. The girls started the first quarter a bit flat and were neck and neck with Hopkinton. However, the Holliston Panthers were able to step up their game in the second half, played excellent defense and moved the ball around well on offense.  Their hard work paid off as they walked away victorious,  29- 8!

Olivia Wing did a great job driving to the hoop and contributed 4 points. Brooke McGrath was also offensively aggressive, pushed through tough defense and got her 1st basket of the season. Julia O’Shaughnessy displayed marked improvement with her defense and rebounding skills, hustling to loose balls and playing tight defense.

The girls are really starting to come together as a team by communicating more on the court and successfully running plays that are leading to great passes and points on the score board. Job well done by all the Panthers that played. They will get some well deserved time off over the holiday break and we hope to bring the fire that was demonstrated in the second half to our next game in the new year!

6th Grade Girls (White)  Coach: Smith

Game 1 (12/21)

When Holliston’s 6th grade girls team (white) schedule was drafted back in October, the league knew they wanted an exposition game in the books. Sudbury laid out a plan to have Holliston play before the holiday break, Holliston accepted their invitation for this non-league game.  Due to the continued sickness plaguing the southeastern New England areas subs were called in from the 3 corners of the town. Returning for weekend only contracts were Ellie Brown, Gwen Rosen, and Becca “don’t get in my way” Lindros. Brooke Sawicki tried her run at point guard driving up the ball against a full court press, passing off to the height of both Ruby Smith and Gwen Rosen. The first half ended with Holliston down by 7 points, heading back to the third quarter Smith swished not one but two shots using her defensive skills to toss aside the Sudbury lineup. Rosen continued to drive into the paint, adding one foul shot, while Sawicki and Brown each had a bucket. Holliston ended the third quarter tying it all. The start of the fourth quarter saw Sam Baweja taking it right up to the center lane to get a bucket before stealing again to rattle Sudbury’s cage, Lauren de Vlaam-Siegers proved excellent downtown defense. Alas the team was taken down by a few quick baskets from Sudbury to end their fight for this expo game.

Game 2 (12/22)

Coming off only a 12-hour break, the Holliston team took their fight to Lexington, looking for a battle not seen in many years. The blood sweat and tears of this team was truly a Christmas miracle as predicted by this reporter last week. Entering the first quarter Lauren de Vlaam-Siegers quickly scored, easily putting up a 7-foot shot, points were on the board and the battle started. The second quarter proved especially magical as 7 points were added giving Holliston a three-point lead, Brooke Sawicki, Ruby Smith, Gwen Rosen all provided the points, but Charley Marcuard provided the keen, quick, and diligent passing. Marcuard used her best Sue Bird behind the back dribbling skills to pull one over Lexington’s defense. Becca Lindros came out with eyes on the ball, giving Holliston 5 steals and one bucket, pushing the team into a comfortable lead. Sam Baweja (already in her aloha attire) gave the team a basket in the late third quarter to solidify a lead that had been unfelt for a long time. The fourth quarter started with Marcuard using her skills to know where each player would be on the court, confusing the Lexington defense with her deliberate fakes and quick pick and rolls, provided successfully by Baweja and Lindros. This reporter did hear a hot mic Ref telling the other Ref “number 10 [Rosen] wants all the players to score, and passes the ball off even if they have a clear shot”, making Rosen a true champion.

8th Grade Girls (Red)  Coach: McDonald

The 8th grade girls, (red), traveled to Medfield for its third road game in three weeks. Both teams played aggressive defense that was supported by officials who allowed the girls some flexibility in their tenacity. A low scoring first half left Holliston with an 11-6 lead. While many battles were fought down low, Holliston’s guard play led to several steals including 6 by Shamili Potturi, who made one layup after another, leading the team in scoring with 10 points. Brooklyn Lessard, Emerson Harrington, and Olivia Kerchner were a thorn in the side of Medfield’s ball handlers all day, and on the offensive side did a great job penetrating Medfield’s zone defense by driving to the basket. Chelsea Dufault continues to be a force down low, with 9 rebounds and 8 points and Caroline Coughlin pulled down 7 rebounds. In the end, Holliston secured a convincing win, 27-11.After the holidays, the girls will be participating in a regional tournament in Connecticut.
