SLUGGER TED WILLIAMS, RED SOX AND CLEVELAND, EXCITE SECTOR
August 27, 1946 – George Doncaster of Holliston met Ted Williams, the slugging sparkplug of the
pennant-bound Red Sox yesterday afternoon for the first time. The meeting was a bit exciting for
both as their cars collided in East Holliston at the junction of Concord and Washington streets.
News Story
The Daily News got early wind of the accident, and after making quite a number of phone
calls, and dispatching a man to the scene of the crash, the entire story was obtained. At least six
different versions were given the reporter in Holliston by excited citizens, and the final story came
from Chief Holbrook of Holliston, who was contacted at his home.
New Car For Ted
Following the Holliston accident Ted Williams and party proceeded to East Douglas, where
Winfield Schuster promptly assured Williams that he would present him a new automobile this
morning. The big mill executive gave Manager Joe Cronin a new car yesterday afternoon, and
promptly made arrangements to give Ted one today, to reimburse him for the trouble the trip
caused.
