DROP 400 – POUND SAFE ON CHURCH LAWN AT HOLLISTON

October 31, 1951 – A 400-pound safe, with the door blown off, was dropped off on the lawn of the Congregational Church on Washington street sometime during the night, according to Police Chief Lewis T. Holbrook. It is believed that the safe was dropped from a truck.

Chief Holbrook said it was a C.J. Tomlinson safe made by the Safe & Lock Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio. It is 34 inches high, 24 inches long and 24 inches wide, painted black with brown trimmings.

There is a locked compartment inside the safe.

“There is evidence that the door of the safe was opened with a torch or a charge of “some explosive,” Chief Holbrook stated.

The safe was first seen by children going to school this morning. Needham police are coming here this afternoon to see if it is one taken from a garage there on Oct. 7.
