The Select Board discussed the Holliston Lions Club’s plans for its annual haunted walk fundraiser at its meeting on Tuesday evening. The Lions Club had been planning to hold the event on the night of Saturday, October 26th. However, that won’t be happening because of the persistent threat of EEE.

The Select Board voted to approve an event permit for the walk to be from 1 to 4 pm on Sunday, October 27th instead of Saturday night. The Board said that health director Scott Moles recommended that it is still not safe to host outdoor events at night.

Members of the Lions Club said that they are worried that the daytime event on Sunday would not bring in enough money to recoup the costs of the event. Last year, the festivities raised about $1,500 each for both the Lions Club and the Community Farm.

However, vice-chair John Cronin pointed out that even if the Board had given permission to hold the event at night, families would be less likely to attend given the risks of EEE. Members of the Lions Club said they will have further discussions about whether to go ahead with the event on Sunday afternoon.

Lions Club member Ed Daniels also spoke to the Board to announce that the Club is running its “Light Up Holliston” campaign again this year, and is seeking donations from the community. Daniels said that the club has set up a GoFundMe page and has a donation jar at Superette. The lights will be put up by volunteers and will be turned on during the Holiday Stroll on November 30th.

The Board then discussed a Massachusetts Safe Routes to School grant that would provide $6,000 to add a crosswalk near the elementary and middle schools. Board member Tina Hein, who has done extensive work on the walking school bus program, said that this new crosswalk would be next to Holliston Oil on Woodland St., and would include a sidewalk extension from the new crosswalk to the Rail Trail.

Both chairman Mark Ahronian and Cronin were supportive of the proposed project. However, because this grant is a reimbursable grant, Cronin wanted to make sure that the Town does not require prior approval at Town Meeting before applying for the grant. The application deadline is October 31st.

During his report, Town Administrator Jeff Ritter said that there are three firms in the running for the landfill solar project, and that he expects a report on those firms from the consultant the town hired sometime next week. He also said that a report on the downtown traffic lights from McMahon should be coming next week as well.

The Board was also scheduled to discuss the proposed curbside textile recycling program, but the contract is still being reviewed by Simple Recycling. It should be ready for next week’s meeting.
