December 3rd COVID-19 Update
Because the way we gather and report COVID-19 data has changed so much since the pandemic began, it can sometimes be difficult to make apples-to-apples comparisons between our current state of affairs and the information we had in March and April. This is especially true when comparing new case numbers, as we are testing far more people than we did at the beginning of the pandemic (which is good) but does ultimately result in higher case numbers.
The MWRA “Biobot” program, which monitors the presence of viral RNA in wastewater in the Greater Boston area, is one way that we can control for outside factors in assessing the presence of the virus in our communities. The pilot program is particularly valuable because studies show it can predict trends up to 7 days in advance of confirmed cases.
For the first time, samples from this program indicate that the level of viral RNA is at the same level or even higher than it was in April, during our first “surge.” This sobering reality should serve as a reminder to us all that it is just as important now as it was in the spring to adhere closely to public health guidance and to practice extreme care if you are considered high-risk. Please stay safe.
