June Selection: Mad Honey by Jodi Piccoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan

We’ve come to expect thought-provoking novels with a twist from Jodi Piccoult and Mad Honey doesn’t disappoint. This book was co-authored by the talented Jennifer Finney Boylan and their partnership translates brilliantly on the page. The story is told in two voices and each author writes one of the points of view. They are interwoven seamlessly to build anticipation, tell each character’s story and lead you on a wild ride.

Let me start off by saying that much of what I loved about this book was being surprised along the way and since I don’t want to take that experience away from future readers, I am not going to give a full plot review here. Mad Honey is a story of two teens who fall in love, but when one is found dead, the other becomes a prime suspect in her alleged murder. It is a suspenseful murder mystery, a coming-of-age love story and a test of a mother’s devotion all mixed together and injected with a bit of bee-keeping history. To be honest, the book had me at first sight… the cover & title drew me in immediately. (I keep bees and will read anything about these fascinating little creatures.) But this book was so much more than that! I couldn’t put it down and when I had to, I couldn’t wait to pick it back up. This story will break your heart and then piece by piece put it back together. Is there a difference between being private and keeping secrets and who can you really trust when it could mean life or death?

“Then one day, Olivia receives a phone call: Lily is dead, and Asher is being questioned by the police. Olivia is adamant that her son is innocent. But she would be lying if she didn’t acknowledge the flashes of his father’s temper in him, and as the case against him unfolds, she realizes he’s hidden more than he’s shared with her.

Mad Honey is a riveting novel of suspense, an unforgettable love story, and a moving and powerful exploration of the secrets we keep and the risks we take in order to become ourselves. “

Spoiler Alert/Trigger Warnings: It should be noted that some content could be very upsetting – loss of a child, domestic abuse, suicide.

We hope you will read with us this month! The Mad Honey will be 10% off at Aesop’s Fable during the month of June.
